For once, we have an easy way to make a difference in playing a part in the survival of Florida’s public schools. No standing in the street with signs or even attending a meeting. However, we have to move faster than the speed of Dear Bubbie grabbing a glazed donut at the Krispy Kreme counter.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 15, Florida legislators will be voting on SB 1708. It’s one of those surreal insane bills that continues the path towards privatizing Florida's public schools. It forces already underfunded public schools to share their space with charter schools.
The link reads:
No parent has asked for this bill. No educator has asked for this bill. The only ones asking for this bill are corporations like Charter Schools USA who are hoping to cash in on even more public funds from Florida's taxpayers. It's time for legislators to stop listening to their corporate donors and to start putting the needs of Florida's children first.
If you don’t quite understand what this all means, let me make an analogy:
Dear Bubbie is a Charter School. The Krispy Kreme Donut is the public schools. Legislators are being asked to place Dear Bubbie in the same space as a Krispy Kreme Donut. What do you think is going to happen to that Donut?
Save the donut. Save public schools by telling legislators no f’ing way to SB 1708. However, do it with class and decorum. Use your napkin.
When you click on the link, you will fill out a form (very easy) unless you don’t know your name or address. (If that’s the case, put down the happy hour margherita and clear your head.) At the end of the form, it asks legislators to vote NO on SB 1708. The reason why is written in for you.
I edited out parts of their rote comment and explained that when things start to fall apart with the public schools that their constituents attended - or have children attending presently - their hands will be dirty. They don’t want to mess with an angry alumni. With the USDOE being dismantled, why should Florida legislators take all the blame if things go South. Let DC take the hit.
However - you do you. If you time yourself, it will probably take you 30 seconds to click on the link, auto-fill the form and click send. Way less time than it took you to read this unfiltered, unedited blog.
Please share with your friends all over Florida and ask them to quickly go to the link and sign the form.
The link to the Florida Education Association (FEA) is here.
No donuts were harmed or eaten in the writing of this blog.
Thank you. The LWVFL is planning on testifying at tomorrow's meeting. At a minimum we will waive in opposition.
I submitted it & hope it makes a difference.
